Dr. Austin has 25 years experience, first as a research scientist then as a senior science advisor in the Canadian government.
As Head of the Science Enablement Unit for the S&T Branch at Environment Canada, she works closely with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Data Officer (CDO), and serves as a bridge between the business side and the science side of the organization. A recipient of departmental awards of excellence, she has played key roles in the development of strategies, policies, and standards to advance open science, Big Data, scientific integrity, governance, IM/IT, Indigenous concerns, and mental health action plans.
Claire has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature and has served in leadership positions or as an invited expert in a wide range of national and international committees and working groups including the WHO International Agency for Research in Cancer, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Research Data Alliance (RDA), CSA, ISO, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Before entering the federal public service, Dr. Austin was guest researcher at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), and associate professor at the University of Quebec.
Claire holds a PhD (1997) from McGill University (Faculty of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health) focusing on airborne toxicants and respiratory protection, an M.Ed. from the Université de Montréal, and a Certificate in Business Analysis from the University of Toronto (2022). She is a licensed member of the Order of Chemists of Quebec.
She received certification as an industrial hygienist (CIH) in 1998, and as a certified management consultant (CMC) in 2000. She is fully bilingual (EN-FR).
